August 17

THE SENIOR MONTHLY DINNER will be held Monday, August 17 and will be hosted by The Residence at McCormick's Creek. Bring a covered dish and a $3 donation. Dinner is at 6 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Roy Weaver and the Monroe County Ramblers.

August 18

THE OWEN COUNTY ART GUILD will hold jewelry classes on Tuesday, August 18 and August 25 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day. The cost is $15 per class and everything is included. Call to register or for more information. 829-3543 or 829-1877.

GOSPORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILL HOST A BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT on Tuesday, August 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. Students and parents are invited to attend to meet their teachers, visit their classrooms, and see old friends! The evening will begin with a meeting in the gym at 6 p.m. followed by classroom visits. Students are encouraged to bring their back-to-school supplies on this night to leave in the classrooms. Kindergarten students will have a special open house beginning at 5 p.m. on the same night.

August 19

OWEN COUNTY EXTENSION HOMEMAKER'S SEWING DAY will be held Wednesday, August 19 from 9-11 a.m. at the Extension Office. Please come help share with the community in sewing projects for the elderly and children.

MYSTERY CLUB AT THE PUBLIC LIBARY… Put on your detective hat and join the OCPL staff for a night of sleuthing at the library on August 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Meet in the quiet study room for a game of role-playing that will keep you guessing who the murderer is (or is it you?). August 20

THE OWEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY WILL HOST A KNITTING CLUB for all interested community members on Thursday, August 20 beginning at 6 p.m. All levels of knitters are welcome, as well as those who like to crochet. This will be an opportunity to meet other local craft enthusiasts and share new stitches, continue work on projects, and give or receive help from your friends. At this first meeting of the knitting club, those who attend are encouraged to bring ideas and advice for the other knitters.

CALICO HOMEMAKERS will meet Thursday August 20, at the Extension office. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with a 'Summer Picnic'.

August 21

THE PATRICKSBURG COMMUNITY CENTER will hold kids night Friday, August 21 from 6-8 p.m.

August 22

START YOU DAY WITH A BREAKFAST DEAL… The Spencer Church of God of Prophecy, 469 South Washington Street, will host breakfast on Saturday, August 22 from 7-11 a.m. The meal is $3 and includes a free drink.

August 23

THE 69TH MEGENHARDT FAMILY REUNION will be held on Sunday, August 23 at Forest Park in Brazil. A carry-in dinner will be served at 1 p.m. Beverages will be furnished.

August 25

THE OWEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY WILL HOLD A MEETING OF THE LIBRARY VOICES BOOK CLUB on Tuesday, August 25 from 2-4 p.m. in the quiet study room (main floor). The group will be discussing Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. A SEMINAR ON SLEEP APNEA AND SNORING will be held Wednesday, August 26 at 7 p.m. in the Wegmiller Auditorium at Bloomington Hospital, 601 West Second Street, Bloomington. It is free and open to the public. Dr. David E. Lawler, board certified in dental sleep medicine will present information on the causes and health-related effects of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring. FREE WELLNESS FRIDAY AT THE OWEN COUNTY FAMILY YMCA is scheduled for August 29, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The theme is "Ask a Personal Trainer" - Stop in and ask one of the personal trainers your exercise questions. September 8

THE GOSPORT LAZY DAYS COMMITTEE meets the second Tuesday of each month, at the Gosport Community Building beginning at 7 p.m.

ADOPTIVE PARENT GROUP… Attention all adoptive parents, parents waiting to adopt, and parents with questions about the adoption process. A new group is taking off here in Owen County focusing on issues of adoption. Topics will depend on expressed needs but could include how to wade through the adoption process, contact vs. no contact with birth parents or answering questions from your adopted child. The group will be an informal discussion type with refreshments and could include occasional presentations from guest speakers. Meetings will be held in the YMCA Community Room on the 2nd Tuesday of each month beginning September 8, 2009. Meeting begin at 6:30 p.m. Child care is available during the meeting in the YMCA's Child Watch for $2 per hour. SCIENCE NIGHT OUT: WONDERLAB UNTAMED - a gala evening to benefit the WonderLab Museum will be held on Friday, September 11 at the Bloomington Convention Center, 302 S. College Avenue, Bloomington from 6:00-9:30 p.m. Cost for the event is $90 per person ($55 tax-deductible) or $720 for table of eight ($440 tax-deductible). This includes cocktail hour (cash bar), gourmet meal, and entertainment. There will be silent and live auctions. Guests must be 21 years of age or older. The event is hosted by IU basketball coach Tom Crean and Joani Crean. CARDINAL STAGE COMPANY IS HOLDING EQUITY/ NON-EQUITY AUDITIONS for The Sound of Music (Dec. 22nd- Jan. 3rd) and The Little Shop of Horrors (Apr. 30th-May 16th) on Sunday, September 13th from 1:00pm to 4:30pm and Monday, September 14th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Monroe County Public Library. Full cast lists and character descriptions for The Sound of Music and The Little Shop of Horrors are available at www. cardinalstage.org. All roles are available. Open to all ethnicities. Actors should prepare 16-32 bars of music from any musical theatre song and a 1-2 minute monologue from any 20th century play. ALL INDIVIDUALS AGE 55 AND OLDER are invited to Senior Salute, held annually at Area 10 Agency on Aging's Endwright Center, for a free luncheon, program, and awards ceremony on Friday, September 18. Senior Salute is in honor and celebration of the invaluable contributions that older adults make to the local community. The program begins at 10:40 a.m.; lunch served at 12 noon; bingo begins at 1:30 p.m. Pre-registration required by September 14. 4 MILE TRAIL RUN/WALK… the Owen County Family YMCA and Friends of McCormick's Creek State Park will host a Four- Mile Trail Run/Walk on Saturday, September 19 beginning at 8 a.m. Register at the Owen County Family YMCA before September 4 for $18 or on-site for $20.
