Spencer Exchange Club To Soon Begin Annual Christmas Tree Sales At Babbs

Staff Report

As the holiday season draws near, so too does the Spencer Exchange Club's annual offering of fresh-cut Christmas trees at Babbs SuperValu, located on W. Morgan Street in Spencer. The majority of the trees offered for sale will be Scotch Pine, but organizers say there will also be some White Pine, and they will vary in size. The price? $20 - your choice.

All revenue generated from the tree sales is used by the club for local projects, including providing scholarships for Owen County students, funds for law enforcement and the fire department, prevention of child abuse, installation and maintenance of Freedom Shrines and other miscellaneous local projects.

Beginning at 12 noon, Friday, November 27, trees can be purchased during the following times from Exchange Club members at the extreme west end of the Babbs' parking lot: Monday through Friday, 6:00-8:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 12 noon to 8:00 p.m.

Trees can also be purchased at other times throughout the day by paying at the office located inside the supermarket.

The Exchange Club offers the following helpful hints for caring for your trees:

•To keep it fresh, store it in a bucket of warm water in a cool environment, such as an unheated garage, until it is ready to be brought indoors;

•Cut two to three inches from the stump before setting up the tree to aid in water intake (may not be necessary as Exchange Club trees are fresh-cut locally and not transported from out-of-state);

•After you set the tree up in the house keep plenty of warm water in the base (at least three inches) and check it daily as the fresh tree will absorb water rapidly;

•Consider buying a tree bag or placing an old blanket under the base of the tree as it makes cleanup easy and gets rid of many of the needles that have dried out;

•Avoid placing the tree near warm or cold drafts, including radiators, heating vents, doorways and even televisions. Your tree will last much longer if placed in a cool room with a constant temperature under 70 degrees.
