Abrell, Ranard & White To Begin S-O School Board Posts In July

Dick Ranard (District II) Dick Ranard (District II) Slightly more than 28 percent of Owen County’s 14,021 registered voters made the trip to the polls Tuesday, with voters in 16 of the 19 precincts facing the assignment of selecting three people to serve four-year terms on the Spencer-Owen School Board.

The polls closed at 6:00 p.m. and the MicroVote tabulation, following a slight delay due to a mix-up in northern Owen County, later revealed the winners...

Dick Ranard, set to retire at the end of the 2009-2010 school term following a 21-year career at Owen Valley High School, defeated incumbent Larry Hight of Spencer 1,597 to 1,373 in the race for the District II seat.

In District III, incumbent Tom Abrell defeated challenger Lonnie Boyce of Marion Township, 1,877 to 1,142.

In District V three candidates were vying for the right to represent Washington Township, including the town of Spencer. Jack White, currently in his sixth year serving as Owen County Emergency Management Director, defeated incumbent Sonia Brinson of Spencer, 1,437 to 1,135, with Jared Myers, also of Spencer, securing 531 votes.

Tom Abrell (District III) Tom Abrell (District III) A quick look at the incoming board members, who will take office in July, reveals:

•Dick Ranard has been a resident of Lafayette Township for the past 20 years and a high school teacher at Owen Valley for 21 years. All total, Ranard has 38 years of teaching experience in four school corporations: South Vermillion Schools, Richland- Bean Blossom Schools, Monroe County Schools, and the Spencer- Owen Community Schools.

A successful former varsity football coach at Edgewood, Bloomington North and OVHS, Ranard plans on retiring from teaching at the end of the 2009- 2010 school year. Prior to a career in education, he served four years of active duty in the United States Marine Corps and is a graduate of Purdue University.

Jack White (District V) Jack White (District V) •Tom Abrell is currently completing his first term on the board, serving the past two as president. He completed his undergraduate biology degree at IU-Bloomington, dental degree at Indiana University of Dentistry in Indianapolis, and a general practice residency at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Abrell has owned a family dental practice in Terre Haute since 1991 and volunteers at St. Ann’s clinic for the underprivileged. An active member of the Spencer United Methodist Church and a supporter of the Owen County Learning Network, Abrell has also served on the Owen County Health Board and the Owen County Sheriff’s Merit Board, both in the capacity of president.

•Jack White, a lifelong resident of Owen County, earned an associate of applied science degree in criminal justice in 2003. He has served the community as a volunteer fireman for the Owen Valley VFD and the Owen County Rescue Team for the past 28 years.

Employed as the county’s emergency management director, White also serves on the board of trustees for the Freedom United Methodist Church.

Ranard, Abrell and White will join current board members Jason Hale, Kelly Hughes, Terry Tackett and Rick Smeltzer in July.

Three precincts in northern Owen County – Jackson, Jennings and Taylor – are part of the Cloverdale Community Schools. Their school board election will take place during the upcoming November 2 general election.
