Amateur Radio Operators To Take Part In Communications Exercise

Staff Report

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) will conduct a communications exercise this coming Friday, January 15th. The format of the test will be a simulation of how initial contacts are made to and from the State Emergency Operating Center (EOC) via Amateur Radio in the event of a real emergency or disaster.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. the Owen County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) and Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) will participate in the communications exercise by checking in local stations. A message about the number of checkins will then be sent to the IDHS EOCenter in Indianapolis as a test of the state-wide amateur radio emergency communications capabilities.

All licensed radio amateurs are invited to check into the Gosport Repeater 146.985 MHz with a CTCSS tone of 136.5. Anyone with a scanner is also invited to listen in as the Owen County Radio Amateurs meet followed by the linking of the repeater to the IDHS in Indianapolis. Radio Amateurs will also be sending messages by radio using digital, Morse Code and voice communications.

At 9:00 a.m. the Owen County Amateur Radio Association will then hold their monthly meeting at the Spencer Christian Church, located at 157 South Montgomery Street in Spencer. The meeting will preview the 2011 activities, discuss ARES/RACES membership and hold a debriefing of the IDHS exercise. The meeting is open to the public.
