Read Galatians 3:23-29

There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

-Galatians 3:28 (NRSV)

My wife and I enjoyed a recent holiday in New Zealand where we saw thousands of sheep and cows. What caught my eye were the paddocks shared by both types of animals. This caused me to reflect on the early settlement of America where cattle ranchers and sheep ranchers killed each other and animals over the mistaken belief that it is not possible for sheep and cattle to live on the same lands.

These battles may be over, but we still haven’t solved the problems of humans living together. We allow political differences, tribal differences, religious differences, racial differences, gender differences, and many other factors to divide us. How sad it is that we do not heed the words Paul wrote to the Galatians -- that God does not value one person over another. That we are clothed in Christ is all that matters to God.

If all of us were to fully follow Christ’s teaching, conflicts over our differences would disappear. I look forward to the time when the lamb will not only lie down with the calf but ultimately with the wolf and the lion. (See Isa. 11:6.)

Prayer: Guide of humanity, may your kingdom come and the battles among people be replaced with peace and understanding. Amen.

Thought for the Day: Through Christ, peace is possible.
