(SEW File Photo) (Editor’s Note: Owen County Preservations issued the following statement in response to Monday’s announcement from Cook Group Incorporated of its planned sponsorship of a full restoration of the historic Tivoli Theatre in Spencer.)

“Owen County Preservations is elated to acknowledge that Cook Group Incorporated will be leading the renovation of the Tivoli Theatre. We are excited to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime project. We look forward to working with a great team that has a proven track record of historic building renovation. We appreciate the opportunity that Cook Group has presented to Owen County Preservations and the entire community of Spencer and Owen County. We also recognize the support and aid of Indiana Landmarks. Their goal of fighting to defend architecturally unique, historically significant, and communally cherished properties is realized in this project.

“We highly value all the community support we’ve received during our endeavor to restore this historic structure. This includes the Spencer Town Council, Kenna Consulting, April Hensley of Leech-Hensley Architects, Jill Curry of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, and the communication efforts of the Spencer Evening World. They were all very helpful in the grant process we were undergoing, prior to Cook Group’s funding. We do want them to know how much we appreciated their support and effort. We hope that support will continue throughout future phases of the ongoing project. We are confident, as is the Cook Group, that the building will be a focal point for downtown Spencer and provide inspiration for similar projects in the future. We will keep the community informed of the progress of the project via the Spencer Evening World and the Tivoli Theatre Facebook page.

“Stayed tuned for more exciting developments as the story unfolds. It has been our goal to restore this local gem to its original luster. With the Cook Group, that dream will be realized.”

Cook Group Incorporated has indicated that construction may start as early as May and is scheduled for completion in 2013.

The Tivoli Theatre, an endangered property under the protection of Indiana Landmarks, is owned by Owen County Preservations, which purchased the building in 2005 to prevent a scheduled demolition.
