Relay For Life Issues Thanks

Dear Editor,

For almost two decades the Relay For Life of Owen County has been held to honor local cancer survivors and caregivers, and to raise much needed funds to support the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. The event was started by one man in Tacoma, Washington in 1985 as a way to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. From there this event spread across the country to every local community, all the way to Spencer, Indiana in 1996. Each year it takes a number of dedicated volunteers to plan and put on the event, many local sponsors to provide the needed funds and services, and hard working fund-raising teams who are personally invested in fighting cancer. In 2012 the Owen County community raised $15,880.

I would like to thank the following teams, organizations, and businesses who helped with this year’s event. The teams were Team Faith, Spencer Lions Club, Small Miracles, Amanda’s Angels, McCormick’s Creek Rehabilitation and Nursing, Team Misfits, Infinity Pro, Wal-Mart Warriors and Just Us Friends and Family. Our top event sponsors were Cook Medical, Spencer Lions Club, Gosport Manufacturing, Gosport Dental, Walmart and Insurance Services. We are also very appreciative of the in-kind support from JD Byrider of Bloomington, Monster Trash, Owen County Democrat Headquarters, Spencer Nazarene Church, and Peoples State Bank. Thank you to McCormick’s Creek Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center for sponsoring the Survivor and Caregiver celebration. And finally I would like to thank the Spencer Evening World for their coverage of our cancer-fighting efforts in Owen County.

Plan to join us for the 2013 Relay For Life of Owen County. If you are interested in getting involved please contact Community Representative Thom Ulmet at Thomas.ulmet@cancer.org or at 812-340-2744.
