Jefferson Township/Coal City Alumni Scholarship Awarded

Kayla Mercer Kayla Mercer The Jefferson Township/Coal City Alumni Scholarship Committee has selected Kayla Mercer as the recipient of its 2013 scholarship.

Kayla is the daughter of Lisa and Michael Mercer, and granddaughter of Nancy Sue (Dayhuff) Schmaltz, a 1956 graduate of Jefferson Township High School. She will graduate this spring from Washington High School with a Core 40 diploma and academic honors.

During high school, Kayla has been active in a number of activities, including National Honor Society, Beta Club secretary, show choir and Tri-M (honorary music program), FFA, yearbook assistant editor, Book Club, Science Club, golf MVP and tennis MVP. She has been active in Youth Group, served in 4-H offices, and as class secretary.

Kayla served as a volunteer tutor at the high school and public library, QuickStart Tennis teacher for children, and Salvation Army bell-ringer, among others.

She plans to pursue a career in Graphic Design at Indiana State University, following a longstanding interest in art.

Eligibility for the scholarship includes the requirement for the applicant to either reside in Jefferson Township in Owen County, or to have an ancestor who graduated from Coal City High School. Kayla is the granddaughter of an alumnus.

The runner-up for this scholarship is Michael Megenhardt of Spencer, and the son of Penny S. and John Megenhardt. He is the grandson of John David Megenhardt of Coal City, a 1945 graduate of Jefferson Township High School.
