Linton Girls Sweep Visiting OV Lady Patriots In Varsity Tennis

by Amanda York
Staff Writer

The Owen Valley Lady Patriots traveled to Linton on Tuesday to take on the host Lady Miners and suffered an 0-5 setback.

At number one singles, senior Kayla Samick fell to Mercedes Shafford, 1-6, 4-6 and at number two singles, Linton’s Brenna West defeated Darby DeFord 6-1, 6-0. Sarah Gilstrap also fell at number three singles, 1-6, 1-6.

“Kayla (Samick) at number one singles did much better in her second (set), which I was proud of,” OV head coach Matt Lowers noted. “Sarah (Gilstrap) played a girl who was just as consistent as she was, which made it very difficult for her. They had some of the longest points I’ve seen this year.”

OV’s number one doubles team of Lexie Heck and Tara Langley was defeated by Linton’s Selena Bowman and Kayla Cole, 6-3, 6-4, while Stephanie Clark and Lorena Dourado fell to Chelsee Budd and Sydney Alltop, 1-6, 2-6.

“Number one doubles gave it a good run in the second set taking a lot of games to deuce, but just could put enough together to make it to a third set,” Lowers continued. “Stephanie Clark was moved up from JV number one doubles to varsity number two doubles last night. I was pleased with both her and Lorena’s hustle out on the courts.”

OV will look to get back on track when they travel to Bloomfield today, Thursday, for a 4:30 p.m. match-up with the Lady Cardinals.
