Adult Smoking Rate Declines

Dear Editor,

The Indiana State Department of Health recently released data compiled by the Indiana Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System for 2013 that shows how our state’s Adult Smoking Percentage declined significantly. The 2013 percentage is 21.9 percent compared to the 2011 percentage of 25.6. This clearly demonstrates that many Hoosier tobacco users have taken charge of their lives using the Indiana Tobacco Quitline (800-784-8669), local quit programs, or just quit “Cold Turkey.”

Unfortunately, not all counties in the state share the same results. The latest Indiana State Department of Health statistics for Owen County still show an Adult Smoking percentage of 32.0. While Owen County is one of the few counties in the state with a free Quit Tobacco Class that provides free patches, gum, and lozenges; the chairs were empty last Tuesday night at 5:30 in the Owen County Family YMCA. We are here for you. Just call 828-9622 for more information.

Dave Newgent,

Owen County Tobacco

Prevention & Cessation Coordinator
