Recycling Center An Asset

Dear Editor,

I am happy to see councilman Neff sees beyond the bottom line in assessing the value of our recycling center. He mentioned the help to the environment, but since dollars and cents are most important in some folks’ minds, they should be aware that there are also unseen savings associated with the center. When members of the Garden Club descended upon a half mile section of Cuba Road to pick up trash, they filled twenty 30-gallon bags of refuse. Ten of the bags were recyclables and they paid the center $10 to dispose of the ten bags of trash. The volunteer help to clean the county roads may not show in the bottom line of the center’s balance sheet, but it definitely goes in the plus column. Asking these same groups to drive to Bloomington for recycling and disposal may lessen the community spirit. The Robert “Bob” E. Clark Center is a feather in Owen County’s cap. Keep it open.
