(Staff Photo) Owen Valley improved to a 6-2 overall with a 4-3 varsity baseball win at home last Friday night over the visiting Southmont Mounties.

The Patriots allowed a run in the top half of the first, but rallied back in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead through the top of the fifth inning. OV plated a run in the bottom courtesy of a Chase Roberts solo home run to push the advantage to 3-1.

The Mounties scored a run of their own in the top of the sixth, but OV answered with a score in the bottom of the sixth to maintain a 4-2 lead. Despite another run by Southmont in the top of the seventh, the Patriots were able to thwart a comeback.

Earning the win on the mound was junior Hunter Sturgeon, who allowed the Mounties three earned runs on five hits, with two walks and one strikeout in seven complete innings of work. OV’s defense committed just two errors.

Junior catcher Chase Roberts led OV at the plate last Friday night. He finished 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, two runs batted in, and one run scored. Senior Devon Shouse was limited to base running duties due to a recent injury, but scored a pair of runs and stolen a base.

The Patriots (6-2) were scheduled to host Monrovia on Monday night. The team will be back in action tonight, Tuesday, in Ellettsville against the Western Indiana Conference rival Edgewood Mustangs at 5:00 p.m.
