Mary Elizabeth Wheeler, 64

Mary Elizabeth Wheeler Mary Elizabeth Wheeler Mary Elizabeth (Burch) Wheeler, 64, of Spencer, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, May 17, 2015. She was surrounded by her family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Marcus Burch and Glacie (Mullins) Burch, and by her brother James Burch. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Kenneth “Mitch” Wheeler; her two sons, Donovan Wheeler and Mark (Stacey) Wheeler; and her brother, Vernon (Mary) Burch. Mary also leaves behind four grandchildren, James, Emily, Eli, and Autumn Wheeler, and an extended family too numerous to name here, but loved by Mary unstintingly.

Originally from Freedom, Mary grew up on the family farm and graduated from Spencer High School in 1968. Mary worked in banking, real estate, education, and county and town government. Mary loved to travel and believed deeply in public service. Inspired by her beliefs and her brother’s sacrifice in Vietnam, Mary, along with like-minded friends, helped create the Owen County War Memorial on the west side of the courthouse lawn. It was just one of Mary’s many efforts to support the community in which she lived.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Mary at the Christian Life Center, 157 South Montgomery Street, on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Visitors wishing to stop by and share their joy of having known Mary may call between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Everyone wishing to stay and hear Pastor Gary Brinson and others commemorate Mary’s life should plan on attending at 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Mary’s family asks those who share her commitment to public service to make a donation to the Owen County Humane Society, 2014 Romona Road, in Spencer, in her memory.
