Come And See
From The Upper Room
The World’s Most Widely Read Daily Devotional Guide

Read John 4:7-42

The Samaritan woman said to the people of the town, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”

- John 4:29 (NIV)

My life seems bland. I wonder, Who wants to follow Christ because of me?

Still, I pray for courage and ask God to give me words that others need to hear.

When a friend noticed that I read my Bible on my break, she asked, “Is this what keeps you calm?” We talked about my daily devotions. As a result, she has resolved to start her own practice of prayer and Bible study.

Not long afterward, a relative asked me to pray with her regarding her troubled marriage. Now we pray every day. Sometimes I come across a passage of scripture for her to read. I talk about my struggles with worry and fear and tell her how God’s word gives me peace. I have realized that I am witnessing to the hope I find in Jesus, and it’s encouraging to her.

I am struck by the simplicity of the woman’s invitation in John 4:29: “Come, see.” Her words led many people to believe in Jesus. When we are open, our lives naturally reflect the transforming love and power of Christ. Even if our lives seem bland, others notice our joy and peace and want to understand. The only invitation we need to extend is this: “Come, see.” The Holy Spirit will do the rest.
