Cloverdale Teen Pleads Guilty To Robbery; Sentenced Wednesday

Mercedes Dawn Caito Mercedes Dawn Caito Mercedes Dawn Caito, 18, of Cloverdale, appeared in the Owen Circuit Court I on Wednesday for a sentencing hearing in front of Judge Lori Thatcher Quillen for the offense of robbery, a level 5 felony. Caito was charged with the offense following a joint investigation conducted by Captain Detective Erich Teuton of the Owen County Sheriff’s Department and Investigator Daniel McBride with the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Caito admitted during the sentencing hearing that, on May 25, 2015, she and four teenage boys travelled to the victim’s residence in northern Owen County with the intent to rob him of valuable items. Caito confirmed that the victim was injured during the robbery, that one of the boys possessed a firearm during the encounter and that she and the boys stole various items from the victim. She also admitted that after the robbery, she and the boys travelled to a campground in Putnam County to have a party.

According to Owen County Prosecuting Attorney Donald VanDerMoere, Caito was sentenced to five years at the Department of Corrections with two years executed and the balance suspended to probation. Caito must serve 75 percent of this sentence under Indiana’s new sentencing law, perform 56 hours of community service, attend counseling, and abide by a no-contact order with the victim.
