Northview Knights No Match For OV On The Tennis Courts Tuesday
The beginning of the season started off a little rocky with a 2-3 loss to the Edgewood Lady Mustangs, but since that time it has been full steam ahead as the Lady Patriots have rolled to a 3-1 record. Tuesday night’s on the road shutout of Western Indiana Conference rival Northview had to be especially sweet.
“This was a big conference win for us and it is the first time since I have been the coach that we swept Northview,” OV’s Barbara Spinks said. “We are very proud of the varsity for this accomplishment.”
In number one singles play, sophomore Kayla Samick defeated Northview’s Haley Leach, 6-3, 6-6 (8-6). At number two singles, junior Victoria Byerly beat Nicole Linton in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 and at number three singles, junior Rachel Truax won, defeating Kelsey Oehler, 6-1, 6-3.
“Kayla (Samick) started off in the first set playing very strong, but in the second set she did not play as she did in the first set, so she had to go into a tie-breaker to get the win,” coach Spinks explained. “Victoria (Byerly) kept the ball in play and waited for her opponent to make the mistakes. At number three singles, Rachel played a smart match and made the Northview player move all over the court to get to the ball.”
The two doubles team also had a good night on the courts. The number one team of Jocelyn Mc- Kay and Taylar Ranard defeated Northview’s Jenna Smith and Trisha Cox, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Hannah Corder and Tiffany Kong, playing number two doubles, also won, defeating Kaysia Reberger and Shelby Timmerman, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.
“Number one doubles, Jocelyn (McKay) and Taylar (Ranard), let the first set get away from them, but worked very hard to get the next two sets,” coach Barbara Spinks noted. “This is the best team they have played this year so it was a very good win for them. Hannah (Corder) and Tiffany (Kong) won the first set, but did not keep the ball away from the net player in the second and just got one game in that set. They regrouped and played better in the third set to get the win.”
The Lady Patriots were set to travel to South Vermillion on Wednesday for showdown with the host Lady Wildcats. Results from that match will be featured in Friday’s edition of the Spencer Evening World.
Weather permitting, OV returns to action again tonight, Thursday, when they finish up their road stint at Brown County, playing the host Lady Eagles at 5:00.
