Lady Patriots Sting Clay City eels, 6-5, For First Win of 2012 Season
It’s no secret that this young, but talented Lady Patriot softball team has struggled this season. Just as naysayers began to, well, nay-say, the Patriots turned things around in grand fashion, beating the Clay City Eels Thursday evening at Patriot Field, 6-5.
“What a great night. We really wanted this win for our girls,” OV head coach Jamie Summerlot said excitedly. “I am very proud of the job they did. It was an exciting game, that stayed 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth and then our bats lit up and we scored six runs. We were getting solid hits and then Kendall Arnold and Beth Mauder executed a couple great bunts to move runners into scoring position. Allisa Polley ripped a ball out to centerfield for a triple and racked up two RBI’s. Kayla Richardson also hit solid tonight getting two hits.”
For the game, Owen Valley had hits from Kayla Richardson with two, Madision Summerlot with two, and one each from Allisa Polley, Kasandra Ooley, Rebecca Strong, and Ashley Wood. Polley knocked in two RBI’s while Strong, Wood and Summerlot each added one. Scoring were Polley, Richardson, Codi Stout, Kendall Anrold, Beth Mauder and Taylor Elliott.
“Defensively the first five innings were played almost perfectly,” coach Summerlot continued. “Our team did not allow any hits in those innings. Rebecca Strong pitched a really strong game. She moved the ball and was hitting her spots consistently. When they did get the bat on the ball her team was there ready to shut it down. Katrina Dayhuff made five terrific catches out in centerfield.
“Going into the sixth inning up 6-0, the girls were excited, but knew they still had work to do. We made our only two errors in the sixth inning and we needed to settle down and take each ball as it came. We started getting ahead of ourselves and caused a few mental errors on judging the ball and allowed them to score five runs in the sixth. But the girls pulled it together, communicated well and got out of the inning.”
“I am proud of how well the girls talked to each other and worked together throughout this game,” coach Summerlot beamed.
