OVHS Defeats Host Tiger Cubs To Advance In 3A Baseball Sectional
The Patriots tallied 11 hits to the Tiger Cubs’ nine and stranded just eight runners on base, while Greencastle stranded 12 runners on the night.
On the mound, OV senior righthander Logan Terrell endured high pitch counts throughout the game, but was able to find his way out of each inning without much damage being done. He went the distance, allowing five runs, four of which were earned on nine hits and seven walks, while striking out seven.
OV committed only one fielding error, which came early in the contest.
At the plate for the Patriots, sophomore second baseman Nolan King started the ball rolling in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run shot over the left field fence to give OV an early 2-0 advantage.
When the tournament host Tiger Cubs rallied back with three runs of their own in the top half of the second, the Patriots answered with three more runs of their own to maintain a 5-3 lead.
OV continued to find ways to drive runs across the plate, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to hold on for the win.
King finished the night 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in, while Trent Whitton went 2-for- 3 with two runs scored and a pair driven in. Nathan Swafford finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in, while Terrell helped out his own cause, going 3-for-4 with one run scored. Ben Allen finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two driven in.
The Patriots were set to face-off against West Vigo in the opening game of day two sectional play at Greencastle on Thursday. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Edgewood/Brown County match-up on Monday morning at 11:00 for the Class 3A Sectional 28 Championship.
