Hold Town Council Accountable
Upon reading the recent report from WTHR regarding the investigation into alleged falsification of reports at Spencer’s waste water treatment plant, I have some immediate concerns regarding the reactions and subsequent plan of action from our elected Town Council. If the allegations that Mr. Edwards falsified reports sent to the state are indeed true, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And while his decades of service have earned him the due process of a thorough investigation, the Town Council’s decision to allow him to work in the department in any capacity is questionable at best. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to place Mr. Edwards on paid leave until the investigation is complete? Doing so would remove a giant distraction, and if Mr. Edwards is indeed proven guilty, limit the potential embarrassment of squandering tax revenue on an official who may have endangered the very population which pays his salary.
When a person is elected by their fellow citizens to represent their interests and upon taking the oath of office, the very minimum required of them should be their availability and presence during a time of crisis. In my opinion the President of the Town Council’s refusal to address this issue in front of the WTHR cameras is a failure to the people of Spencer and therefore inexcusable. When paired with their handling of Mr. Edwards’ employment status during the investigation, this failure to represent Spencer to a major media outlet is both alarming and unacceptable to this resident of Spencer. Going forward as citizens we must hold the Town Council accountable for operating with more transparency, integrity, and common-sense in their decision making process.
