OVHS Lady Patriot Volleyball Squads Set To Scrimmage Against Columbus East Tonight
“This year I feel like we are a well-balanced and experienced team,” second-year varsity head coach Kimberly Hale said. “Breaking it down, we have some quick passers; good, hard hitters; aggressive blockers and we are serving in the areas we need to be serving so we also have aggressive serving.
“We are coming in with six senior and four juniors so we are a well-developed team. The girls are not afraid of anything… they are go-getters… they’ll go after anything. The things that we need to work on are just being more positive and not getting down too easily (mentally), to work through it.”
Hale’s first year as head coach yielded a 17-12 record overall and 3-3 in the Western Indiana Conference in 2011. She lost just two players from that squad in graduates Allisa Polley and Kasandra Ooley. She brings back seniors Kendall Hamilton, Paige Wetzel, Shelby Roberts, Mackenzie Stogsdill, Rebecca Strong and Kayla Richardson, along with juniors Katie Watson, Morgan Schafer, Cecelia Herrington and Stephanie Yeatman.
“Our goals include finishing on top in our conference and playing in the sectional final on our home floor and coming out on top,” she noted.
“We are trying to do some new stuff,” coach Hale continued. “We are going to be a little bit more aggressive in our play this year. We are working really hard on our hitting, passing and to really penetrate on our passing.
“The girls have been working hard all summer, on and off the court. I feel that we’ve gotten better with our strength, endurance and jumping. This summer the girls have worked hard on the little stuff. We went to DePauw University team camp and it was a great experience and a great bonding time for the girls.
“The junior varsity should also have another good year. They are coming back with quite a few new players.
“One thing about all these girls… they are out there to play hard and win, but they are also out there to have fun. It’s a great thing because they pull themselves up and cheer each other on.”
OV travels to Cascade on Monday, August 13, before playing host to Terre Haute South two nights later.
