OV Falls To BNL, Defeats Host At Annual Mustang Tennis Invitational

With coach Matt Beckwith out of town and Richard Norman filling in as ‘assistant coach,’ the Owen Valley boys’ tennis team traveled to Edgewood on Saturday morning to compete in the annual Mustang Invitational.

In the first match, despite overall tough play, the Patriots fell 3-2 to Bedford North Lawrence. At number one singles, Kendal Norman defeated BNL’s John Garriott, 6-2, 6-0 and at number two singles, senior Corbin Worland won 6-1, 6-3 over Johnny Underwood. Playing number three singles, senior Eric Kong lost 6-2, 6-1 to Jack Green.

In doubles’ competition, Hogan McHaley and Noah Woodruff lost 0-6, 0-6 to BNL’s Austin Carpenter and Michael Carr. With the score all tied up at two matches apiece, the fate of the contest relied on the outcome of the number two doubles match. After losing the first set, 3-6, Jonathan Carey and Anthony Session can roaring back in the second, winning by the same margin, 6-3. In the third and final set, the Patriots fell 1-6 to Kaleb Carpenter and Taylor Turpen.

In the second match-up for the Patriots, Owen Valley defeated Edgewood, 4-1.

Norman and Worland kept their win streaks alive with Norman defeating Mitchell Wampler, 6-2, 6-1 and Worland defeating Michael Niemi, 6-3, 6-4. Kong fell to Mitch Williamson, 0-6, 0-6.

Both of the Owen Valley doubles’ teams walked away with victories in the second match. McHaley and Woodruff defeated Alec Markum and Trevor Moore, 6-2, 6-4 and Carey and Sessions won 6-1, 6-0 over Ryan Braynlin and Andy Craig.

The Patriots next host the Bloomfield Cardinals on Thursday, September 13 at 4:30 p.m.
