The Cloverdale girls’ basketball squad opened their 2012- 2013 campaign with a home contest Tuesday against the Tri- West Lady Bruins, losing 73-30.

“We know each year our team’s skills and conditioning will be truly tested right out of the gate against a tough opponent in Tri-West,” Cloverdale head coach Matthew Langdon said. “(Tri-West’s) coach (Brad) Acton has done a great job building that program and producing good teams each year.

“I thought we did some good things in the first half. We were able to get behind their defense and get some baskets in the half-court set. Mel Nally led us in scoring with 10 points, followed by Paige Gruener with eight. The girls have been working much harder this year in practice and we feel if we can continue to do that we will start to see the benefits in future games.”

The Lady Clovers were set to host Union Dugger on Thursday night. Results from that contest will be available in Monday’s edition of the Spencer Evening World.

Coach Langdon’s squad will travel to Owen Valley on Monday, November 12. Junior varsity action is set to begin at 6:00 p.m., with the varsity game to follow.
