Spencer Community Eyecare Adds New Diagnostic Equipment, Offers Macular Risk Assessment Testing
Dr. Petry spoke about the addition of a new Optovue Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT), as well as a new Humphrey Matrix Visual Fields Perimeter to the practice.
“The OCT is a new scanning laser which allows us to image critical structures within the eye with incredible, microscopic detail,” he said. “It really raises the bar in terms of our ability to detect and manage diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic problems, and really anything having to do with retinal pathology.”
The Humphrey Matrix unit is an updated instrument for testing the patient’s side vision with greater accuracy.
“It allows us to find and assess visual field defects more quickly and with greater accuracy than ever before,” Dr. Yue added. “This is especially important in cases of glaucoma, as well as visual field defects due to stroke or other systemic causes.”
Spencer Community Eyecare will also be one of the first practices in the Midwest to be offering Macular Risk Assessment (MRA) testing.
“MRA allows us to use genetic testing of the patient’s DNA to determine their risk for developing Macular Degeneration, the leading cause of permanent blindness in the U.S.,” Dr. Petry explained. “We simply take a painless swab of the inside lining of their cheek, and this sample is sent to a testing lab. In the case of a patient who already has Macular Degeneration, the test tells us the risk of the patient progressing to one of the more serious forms of the disease. We can then adjust their follow-up accordingly. We can also determine the risk of a patient without the disease developing it at some future date – for instance, if the disease runs in their family.”
OCT, Matrix and MRA testing are covered by most insurances, including Medicare, and Medicaid.
