OV Gymnasts Earn Second Place Finish At Southmont Invitational

The Owen Valley Lady Patriot gymnastics squad, under the direction of coaches Cathleen McPhee and Rick Zufall, traveled to Southmont on Saturday to compete in the host Mounties’ annual invitational, finishing in second place as a team with a score of 101.125.

Anna Watkin led Owen Valley with a score of 36.225. Watkin had a season-high 9.4 on vault; she also earned an 8.975 on floor, an 8.95 on bars and an 8.9 on beam.

Senior Caitlin Norman also had a solid night, hitting her highest score of the season on vault with an 8.7 and on beam, with an 8.85. She also had an 8.875 on floor and a 6.75 on bars. She finished with an all-around score of 33.175.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Graceson Arthur also tallied a season-best score with an 8.5 on vault. She also had an 8.25 on floor, a 7.875 on beam and a 7.1 on bars.

Amanda Jacobs competed for OV on the vault, posting a score of 7.3, and on the floor with a 5.950.

The Lady Patriots will travel to Columbus East this coming Friday, March 1, to compete in sectional competition. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will include athletes from Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Columbus East, Columbus North, Jeffersonville, Martinsville, Owen Valley and Seymour.

According the the IHSAA website, ‘the top six place winners in each event advance to the regional tournament; the top six place winners in the all-around competition advance to the regional tournament; all gymnasts who receive the score of the sixth place gymnast at the previous state finals meet advance to the regional tournament (Bars – 9.475; Beam – 9.425; Vault – 9.550; Floor Exercise – 9.425; All-Around – 37.300); and the three teams compiling the highest number of points at each sectional shall advance as a complete team to the regional tournament.
