OV Sixth Graders Finish Fourth In IGHL Tourney

Staff Report

Owen Valley’s sixth grade girls’ basketball team finished fourth in the Indiana Girls Hoops League (IGHL) state tournament with losses to Wabash Valley Elite Terre Haute, 34-19, and New Palestine, 21-19.

Abigail Herrington paced the squad with 10 points against the Wabash Valley Elite, followed by Katie Carver with two, Katie Farris two, Lexi Carver two, Dazia Drake one, Login Richardson one, and Jozee Spatta one.

Against New Palestine, the Lady Patriots were led by Farris with eight, Katie Carver five, Drake two, Spatta two, and Ashley Johnson two.

“The IGHL state tournament did not end the way we hoped,” noted OV coach Donnie Carver. “We finished fourth in the state, which is a great accomplishment, but we wanted much more. In the first game we were just out coached, out matched and out played. We got down early and got back to where we were only down 10 at the half. We could just never make consecutive shots to make a run.

“In the third place game, we stumbled out of the gate again. We were down 6-0 at the end of the first. We came back to lead by one at the half. The second half was nip and tuck the whole way and we just could not get the last stop or bucket we needed. The girls played very hard defensively but we could just not hit enough shots in a very physical game. We had a great crowd for both games and I really appreciate everyone supporting and traveling to see the girls.”

OV (20-4) will wrap up the season by competing in the Midwest Youth Tournaments Indiana State Championship in Salem, Indiana this coming weekend.
