Hope Of History

Dear Editor,

In Webster’s Universal Dictionary of 1910, one definition of “hope” is: a desire of some good, accompanied with at least a slight expectation of obtaining it, or a belief that it is obtainable.

We at the Owen County Art Guild have this kind of hope and desire. A true hope and desire that dispersed among the many past and present members of the art guild and their survivors is an immense quantity of Owen County Art Guild history. At the onset of the art guild there were quite small annual booklets of exhibits and events, this later evolved into an annual booklet of five and a half by eight and a half inches in size with additional information of upcoming events and exhibits of art for its members, to include a set of bylaws. Later, this evolved to be 8.5 x 11 with even more additional information. There must have been monthly newsletters from the secretary as well as minutes of meetings for members. All of this type of information can and will help us, the Owen County Art Guild, to rebuild our precious history lost to the 2008 flood. This is historical documentation we would implore all of you to look very diligently for within the deep reaches of your basements, storage areas, attics, closets, old computers, dressers and desks – all of this information must still exist somewhere, just laying around collecting dust. This information is immensely important to us, the Owen County Art Guild, as it is “us.” It is our beginning; our history; our archives; and, yes, very important. All information can be photocopied. We would prefer the originals, however, copies are better than nothing at all.

Please look very diligently and when you find any of these items, please donate or at least allow us to photocopy your finds. All information should be brought or sent to the Owen County Art Guild at 199 West Cooper Street, Spencer, IN 47460. Please call us at 812-829-1877 as arrangements could be made to pick up any information you might locate. Please at least look. Our early history could be in your hands.
