May 2

THE CLOVERDALE FFA GREENHOUSE will be open Thursday, May 2, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The greenhouse is located on the south side of Cloverdale High School. For more information, contact Tiffany Douglass or Chelsey Meluch at 765-795-4203.

THE OWEN COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY WILL HOST ITS ANNUAL LINCOLN DAY DINNER on Thursday, May 2, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour, following by dinner at 6:30. The guest speaker will be Secretary of State Connie Lawson. Tickets are available by calling 812-821- 3515 or 812-821-2874. Tickets are $8 each or two for $15. Children under age 5 will be admitted free of charge. The annual event will be held at Republican Headquarters, located on East Franklin Street in downtown Spencer.

PROJECT GOOD START will meet Thursday, May 2, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Baptist Church. The group continues to look for ways to make Coal City a better place to live.

THE ENDWRIGHT CENTER WILL OFFER A HULA CLASS taught by native Hawaiian Carol Reynolds on Thursdays in May at 1 p.m. This is a great exercise for those with arthritis as there are no strenuous movements, just a gentle movement of the feet and no bending. Reynolds also shares some of the Hawaiian culture with her students and answers questions. Fore more information, call the center at 812-876-3383, extension 515.

May 3-4

THE SPENCER CHRISTIAN CHURCH WILL HOST ITS ANNUAL SPRING FLING SALE on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, in the Christian Life Center starting at 9 a.m. each day. A lunch of chicken and noodles, dressing, vegetables, homemade rolls, pie and a drink will be available for purchase at a cost of $6 per person from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Carry-out will be available.

OWEN COUNTY EXTENSION HOMEMAKERS WILL HOST A SPRING SALE EVENT on Friday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Owen County Fairgrounds. Several vendors will be on-site. Coffee, juice, doughnuts, BBQ sandwiches, hotdogs, chips and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

May 3

SPENCER HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1951 will meet Friday, May 3, at 9 a.m. at Chambers Smorgasbord. All classmates are welcome.

AMERICAN LEGION POST #285 WILL BEGIN OFFERING TENDERLOINS AND FRENCH FRIES at a cost of $6 per plate every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning May 4. Call ahead orders welcomed, 829-9088. Anyone over age 18 is welcomed inside the building. The post is located at 154 South Main Street in Spencer.

WRITER’S GROUP AT THE OWEN COUNTY ART GUILD, Friday, May 3, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come and share your writing with peers.

THE FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT, INC. will hold its annual meeting on Friday, May 3, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Freedom Community Center.

THE ENDWRIGHT CENTER WILL OFFER AN ELDER LAW CLASS on May 3 with Jessica Merkel and May 9 with Shirley Boardman from 10:00-11:30 a.m. They will be discussing issues concerning health initiatives. May 4

THE OWEN COUNTY CHRISTIAN MEN’S FELLOWSHIP (OCCMF) will meet for their monthly Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, May 4, at the Millgrove United Methodist Church. The OCCMF sponsors the Owen County Weekday Religious Education (WRE) program at all four S-OCS elementary schools. All Christian men are invited to attend – breakfast will be served at 8 a.m.

CHAOS AT THE OWEN COUNTY ART GUILD, Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the guild’s children’s art program. There is no fee, however donations are helpful.

THE PATRICKSBURG COMMUNITY CENTER WILL HOST A COMMUNITY HOG ROAST AND EUCHRE TOURNAMENT on Saturday, May 4. The hog roast will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with the euchre tourney to follow at 6:30 p.m. at a cost of $4 per person. All proceeds will benefit the community center.

THE FREEDOM COMMUNITY MOTHER-DAUGHTER BANQUET will be held Saturday, May 4, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Freedom Community Center. There will be a pitch-in salad and dessert bar, door prizes, and entertainment. Drinks and table service will be furnished. The Freedom United Methodist Church is once again hosting this event and they invite all mothers and daughters to attend and enjoy an evening of good fellowship.

May 5

JOHN CARPENTER WILL BE HONORED AS A VETERAN OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR on Sunday, May 5, at 2:30 p.m. when a grave marker for him will be dedicated in Hicks Cemetery, about six miles south of Spencer. For more information, contact Betty Yoder at 812-336-0901.

THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG 4-H CLUB will meet Tuesday, May 7, beginning at 7 p.m. at the In God’s Arms Fellowship Hall in Spencer. Bring a non-perishable food item for the food pantry. All members are urged to attend.

THE JOLLY HOMEMAKERS will meet Wednesday, May 8th at the Franklin Community Center at 6:30 p.m. This month’s meeting will be hosted by Judy Foster and Sandy Arthur. Please remember to bring your empty towel rolls, gently used washcloths and towels for Volunteer Community Support Projects. Also, please bring a plant to exchange with one of your members.

THE OWEN COUNTY CENTER FOR WOMEN’S MINISTRIES WILL HOST A YARD SALE/BAKE SALE on Saturday, May 11 from 8 a.m. to ? at the center, located at 751 East Franklin Street in Spencer. This sales will be cancelled in the event of rain. Proceeds will benefit the center’s operating expenses and the pastor and wives luncheon in June.

THE OWEN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PROGRAM

WILL HOST ITS ANNUAL PUMP AND WASH FUNDRAISING EVENT on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Casey’s General Store in Spencer. Players will be pumping gas, washing your vehicle’s windows and hand washing cars for a donation. Proceeds will be used to improve Patriot Field and purchase new equipment.

OWEN COUNTY 4-H TAG DAY FOR SWINE, SHEEP AND GOATS is set for Saturday, May 11, at the Owen County Fairgrounds. Swine tagging will take place from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and sheep and goats from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. All sheep, goats and swine that will be exhibited at the 2013 Owen County Fair must participate in tag day. FREEDOM COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY will be held Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Meet at the Freedom Baptist Church lot. Please bring your garden tools and shovels, brooms, rakes, weedeaters, etc. Donations of trash bags, bottled water, gloves, snacks or money to help clean up would be greatly appreciated. THE RSVP 55+ VOLUNTEER PROGRAM AND AREA 10 AGENCY ON AGING WILL HOST A PEOPLE’S POTLUCK on Wednesday, May 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Endwright Center, located at 631 West Edgewood Drive in Ellettsville. Volunteers, seniors, friends and families welcome. Come and bring a dish to share... but most importantly, come and join in the fun! OWEN COUNTY EXTENSION HOMEMAKER’S SEWING DAY will be held May 15 from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon at the Purdue Extension Office, 180 South Washington Street, Spencer. Please join in helping others by making handmade items for Nursing Homes, HealthCare Facilities, and Riley Hospital. Everyone is welcome to come cut, stuff and sew items!
