INDOT: No Concern Of Cavern Opening Up Further Over Time
Contractor Milestone discovered the large hole between County Line Road and Sunnyside Lane while working on the ongoing $2.8 million sight distance improvement project.
INDOT Seymour District Media Relations Director Harry Maginity said officials are not concerned that the cavern may open up further over time due to presence of solid rock on the sides and bottom of the hole.
The strategy to fill the cavern will begin by lining it with filter fabric, followed by rip rap. Number two stone will then be used to fill in the voids remaining between the larger stones. A deep concrete slap will also be poured, reinforced with steel, followed by number eight stone as a drainage layer. Lastly, contractors will build a multi-lift asphalt roadbed on top.
“We anticipate receiving approval for this plan in the near future,” Maginity said. “Meanwhile, there has been no time lost due to the cavern... the contractor has had areas on which to work on either side of the site.”
Motorists are reminded that while INDOT has maintained high mobility through the construction site, the speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour.
