THE OWEN COUNTY HISTORICAL & GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY will hold an educational program on Tuesday, October 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the In God’s Arms Fellowship Hall (old IGA grocery store), located at 95 West Franklin Street in Spencer. The program will feature a group of Indiana University students who will give a presentation about research they are doing regarding the lives of African Americans buried in the Walden Cemetery and in other Owen County cemeteries. The program is free and open to the public.
EXTENSION HOMEMAKERS’ SEWING DAY will be held Wednesday, October 16 from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon at the Extension Office, 180 S. Washington Street, Spencer. The group will be cutting and sewing items for sick children, rehab and cancer patients, as well as those in hospice care. Please join in helping others. All are welcome!

MIDDLE WAY HOUSE WILL HOST A FREE PUBLIC PROGRAM on Wednesday, October 16, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Owen County Family YMCA. ‘In Her Own Words: Survivors Speak Out’ is aimed at increasing domestic violence awareness. Those in attendance will light purple colored sky lanterns at the end of the program to ‘make a wish’ for all domestic violence survivors and to empower those who have suffered to begin the healing process. The fund-raising event will include a Chili Dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., featuring chili, hot dogs and desserts for just $1 per item; and a Silent Auction from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bounce houses and children’s games will remain open from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Game tickets are just 25 cents, while bounce house arm bands will be available for purchase for $5.
