Patriots Draw West Vigo For First Round Of Wabash Valley Classic

Staff Report

While many are counting down the days until Christmas, high school basketball fans from throughout the Wabash Valley are also counting down the days until the opening tip-off of the annual Wabash Valley Pizza Hut Classic.

The 14th annual post-holiday hoops tournament, held at Terre Haute North High School, gets underway at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 26 with a game one match-up between South Vermillion and Riverton Parke. Game two will tip-off at approximately 11:30 a.m. between Northview and Linton-Stockton.

Coach Chad Smith and his Owen Valley Patriots will take on this weekend’s Western Indiana Conference opponent, West Vigo in a re-match in game three, tipping off at approximately 1:00 p.m.

With a win, OV will play the winner of Terre Haute North and Shakamak at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 27. In the event of a game-one loss, the Patriots will face the loser of the same contest on Friday at 11:30 a.m.

The four-day, double-elimination tournament is expected to conclude on Monday, December 30.

OV will get its first shot at the Vikings in this year’s conferenceopener on Saturday, December 7, at West Vigo. The girls’ game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m., with the boys expected to begin play at approximately 7:30.

In 2012, the Patriots were forced to forfeit the first game of the tournament to Shakamak due to winter weather preventing the team from making the trip to Terre Haute. OV came back in the consolation bracket and suffered a 65-43 loss to Monrovia before defeating Turkey Run, 62-51.

“We are excited to be in the tournament, it is always fun, but we’re not too thrilled about playing West Vigo so quickly after playing them in the regular season, but you never know what may happen with incoming weather this week, so I guess it is not that bad,” coach Smith said. “We are very familiar with them and it seems like we play several times every year with this tournament and conference play along with sectional play. We have two big weekends of play leading up to the tournament so hopefully we can go into it with some momentum.”

If the weekend weather forecast holds true, Friday snowfall may impact the scheduling of OV’s next contest on Friday night at Linton-Stockton and possibly Saturday’s trip to West Terre Haute.
