SPD Warns Citizens Of Online Facebook Scam

The Spencer Police Department (SPD) is urging area Facebook users to be weary of an online scam involving the social networking site.

SPD Town Marshal Richard Foutch was informed by a citizen recently that she was contacted by a “Peter Robel” who claimed she had been selected to receive a $150,000 ‘star prize of the week’ as a Facebook Active user compensation bonus.

The individual said that the federal government established an empowerment program to help the “American, Australia, Europe communities and other countries around the world affiliated with Facebook Active a user Compensation bonus.”

The claim further advises that the individual’s Facebook user name and actual name were ‘drawn electronically.’ The message also says they will need to confirm some information with the ‘winner’ before they can deliver the winnings to their home.

“Just like with most everything, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Foutch said. “Nobody is going to give you free money nowadays.”
