County Highway Commended For Snow Removal Efforts By S-OCS
The six to seven inches of snow that blanketed Owen’s 630-plus miles of county roads last Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning resulted in classes being canceled for Spencer-Owen Community Schools (S-OCS) on Wednesday. Efforts from the highway department’s snow removal fleet, though, helped students return to the classroom the following day.
“While the snow caused the school corporation to cancel school on Wednesday, the effort of the Owen County Highway Department on Wednesday allowed us to operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday,” S-OCS Superintendent Greg Linton said. “Our buses were able to operate on most of the county roads with no issues. I know that the highway department worked many long hours on Wednesday to clear the roads so that we were able to have school (Thursday). Their efforts are very much appreciated.”
More accustomed to hearing complaints this winter season, highway department superintendent Joe Pettijohn was appreciative when he learned of Linton’s comments.
“I think we did a great job with what we’ve got. The biggest thing was that during our last snow we had drifting and the snow was so heavy, this time we didn’t have as much snow and no drifting,” Pettijohn said. “That was a big key, we didn’t have to turn around and plow a road three and four times, which makes a world of difference.”
Pettijohn noted that while he utilized the last of the department’s supply of salt and sand mixture on area hills and intersections, cold temperatures have prevented the mixture from doing its job – melting snow. He added that, despite repairs being made to worn out equipment, the department is as prepared as it can be for the next round from Mother Nature.
“I still have my feelers out for salt, but salt isn’t out there, because everybody’s usage has doubled. The quantity just isn’t out there,” he said. “Plus, I have one dump truck and three pickup trucks down right now, which is just something you plan on with what we’ve got to work with.”
