Law Enforcement Officers Attend Free Domestic Violence Training

Staff Report

Officers from the Owen County Sheriff’s Department, Spencer Police Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana State Police were on hand this past Wednesday for a training session sponsored by the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office. Those in attendance listened as retired Monroe County Deputy Sheriff Barbara Beland gave a presentation concerning the effects of domestic violence on children.

Beland, a certified law enforcement trainer, spoke about the physical and psychological impact of domestic violence on children. She discussed ways to effectively comfort and communicate with children during these stressful situations and ways to ensure their safety. Beland advised officers not to underestimate the lasting damage caused by children witnessing these types of violent interactions between their parents or guardians and she stressed the importance of contacting the Department of Child Services each time they believe children have been subjected to this type of violence.

Officers also received instruction from the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office concerning recent changes in Indiana case law and they were advised that major changes to the criminal code are on the horizon based on bills that were passed and signed into law during the 2013 legislative session.
