American Legion Honors Spencer Veteran For Sixty Years Of Service

United States Navy veteran Henry Mathes of Spencer was surprised by more than just the spring-like temperatures on Friday afternoon when he received a certificate honoring his sixty years of service with the Spencer American Legion Call-Payton Post #285.

A past commander of the post (1975), Mathes served in the U.S. Navy in the early 1950s as a Third Class Petty Officer onboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea aircraft carrier during the Korean War.

Taking part in the special presentation were, left to right: Past Post #285 Commander Billy Carmichael (1995), Henry Mathes, and current Post #285 Commander Ron Henry.

The Spencer American Legion Call-Payton Post is located at 154 South Main Street and can be reached by phone at 829-9088. (Staff Photo)
