Suspect Sentenced Tuesday On Felony Child Solicitation Charge
Michael Pat Spillman, 19, of Spencer, will be on the Indiana Sexual Offender Registry for at least the next ten years after pleading guilty to a D-Felony charge of Child Solicitation. Spillman admitted during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing in the Owen Circuit Court to pursuing a thirteen-year-old girl while he was eighteen. He further admitted to engaging in sexual intercourse with the girl during the same period of time and while knowing their respective ages.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed in this case, officers from the Spencer Police Department (SPD) stumbled upon this crime while investigating a separate and completely unrelated criminal matter. SPD Deputy Town Marshal Nathan Martin led the investigation and he used Susie’s Place to conduct an interview of the victim. Susie’s Place is a child advocacy center in Bloomington where forensic interviews are conducted on children who witness or are victims of abuse or neglect.
According to Owen County Prosecutor Don VanDerMoere, Spillman was sentenced to three years in the Department of Corrections. He was ordered to be assessed for mental health and sexual deviance counseling needs, to abide by a no-contact order with the victim, to register with the local agency who maintains the sexual and violent offender registry and he will be ordered to abide by the terms of any such registration requirements.
