Owen History Books Are Available At Special Holiday Discount Prices
The Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society (OCHGS) is offering the 1884 Owen County and the 1994 Owen County history books at special discount prices for this holiday season. The books are available for purchase at locations in Spencer, Gosport and Coal City, and also by mail order. Both books are of exceptional quality with deluxe paper and hardcover binding. Both contain an everyname index. The books are nice on their own, but also compliment each other nicely and make a great companion set.
“History of Owen County, Indiana 1884” is a reprint of the history edited by Charles Blanchard and first published in 1884. It covers the early history of the county, including topics such as Indian history, early settlement, the establishment of the county seat, county statistics, public buildings, topography, geology, and the county’s natural beauty and resources. The book provides histories of all thirteen townships, including towns and villages, pioneer life, roads, mills, churches, schools, etc. The 1884 history also has numerous biographical sketches.
“Owen County, Indiana: a history 1994” covers general county history and the history of all thirteen townships. The general history part of the book covers topics such as county government, railroads, cemeteries, veterans, organizations, natural resources, roads and utilities, and much more. Each township section includes history of towns, villages, communities, businesses, schools, and churches, as well as personal sketches. Historic pictures are featured throughout the book. The book also has an extensive family history and genealogy section with 583 family stories. The 368-page book was a project of OCHGS.
