Coal City Man Hurt In Muzzleloader Mishap
Darren Collenbaugh, 20, of Coal City, was injured while hunting deer near Coal City shortly before the noon hour on Friday, December 9. Collenbaugh received serious injuries to his hand and stomach when his muzzleloader rifle misfired. He was later taken by Trans Care Ambulance service to Greene County Hospital in Linton where he was then flown by Air Evac to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville.
Collenbaugh had reportedly been hunting deer with his cousin, 22-year-old Jacob Collenbaugh, and Justin Brezina, 21, both of Poland. The two men were moving toward Darren Collenbaugh’s location and both could see him, when they heard a shot. The two immediately heard Darren yelling that he was injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. in a wooded area north of 13060 South County Line Road and County Road 300 East near Coal City. Indiana Conservation Officers Dale Clark and Jason Sullivan are investigating the incident. The investigation into the cause of the incident remains ongoing. The firearm has been collected to possibly determine any contributing factors to the misfire.
