Read Psalm 46:1-11
The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
- Psalm 34:15 (KJV)
My niece always called me when she had a problem to work through. One morning, she had a particularly complicated problem that took some time to explain. I was listening intently, without interrupting her, in order to get an accurate sense of her concern. Suddenly, she stopped and asked, “Are you there?”
“Yes,” I answered. “I’m listening.” Reassured, she continued. Then we talked until she felt her problem was resolved.
It occurred to me that sometimes we feel as if God is not listening or has forgotten about us. Like my niece, we ask, “Are you there?” The answer is yes. God is always with us, listening to us, caring about us, leading us through every situation. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1). We need only to be still and to listen for God’s voice.
Ecclesiastes 3:7 says that there is “a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.” God listens and God speaks, sometimes directly to us inwardly, in our heart and mind, and sometimes through other people.
Thought for the Day: Even when we feel that no one is there, God is listening.
Prayer: Gracious God, help us to be good listeners so that your inspiration can flow through us to those who need direction. Amen.
