Read Luke 15:1-10

Jesus said, “I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Luke 15:10 (NRSV)

I was at the recycling center, sorting my accumulation of metal cans, glass bottles, newspapers, and plastic containers. To my surprise, I found my lost cell phone in a bag of newspapers and cans. For weeks I had searched the car, the house, and the garden to find it. The cell phone was important for work and personal communication. I had feared it was gone forever and was delighted to have found it.

Even more fervently than I searched for my phone, God seeks us when we are lost. In arrogant self-sufficiency, I wander away as if I do not need God. In stubbornness, I go my own way instead of listening to my Maker. But when I wake up to my foolishness and return to God, repenting of my sinful pride, God welcomes me with delight. Even though I am tempted to condemn myself, the Lord restores me to serving. God cherishes a close relationship with me more than I prize anything I own.

The parable of the lost coin teaches that heaven rejoices when we turn from sin and seek the Lord.

Thought for the Day: The Lord rejoices when we ask for direction and forgiveness.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for valuing a close relationship with us. Thank you for cherishing us ordinary people as your own. Amen.

Poll

According to Rasmussen Reports, polarization among today’s voters is apparent when they are asked whether the U.S. Constitution should be changed or left alone, with support for the Constitution as is at its lowest level in a decade. How do you feel?
