Freshman Lady Patriots Finish Season With Win
The Owen Valley freshman girls’ basketball squad hosted the West Vigo Lady Vikings in Patriot Hall Wednesday evening, coming away with a season-ending 26-15 win.
“We played very well together, probably our best game as a group,” freshman coach Stacey Eaves said. “Our entire program is fighting illness and Courtney Drescher was sick and unable to play. West Vigo was forced to play some of their sophomores due to numbers, so we did dress sophomores Kayla Samick and Jocelyn Bucy to give us a couple of subs. They both did a great job filling in and I appreciated them being willing to do that for us. It was a great game to finish our freshman season with.”
After a 15 point first quarter, OV lead 23-10 at the half. The girls played solid defense, holding West Vigo scoreless in the third period.
The Patriots were led in scoring by Brittany Swaim with 11, including a three point shot and 2-for-3 from the free-throw line. Katrina Dayhuff followed with nine points despite not feeling well. She added three rebounds and three steals. Kristen Alexander finished with four points and two rebounds while Zaine Bucy had two points, four assists and one steal. Emily Smith finished with two rebounds, one assist, one block and three steals.
“Brittany has worked hard on her outside shooting, putting in the extra time and it has paid off,” coach Eaves noted. “Kristen did a good job defending the post.
“Zaine is a very unselfish point guard,” coach Eaves continued, “She passes up shots and really tries to get the ball to the open person to make a play. She did a good job of taking care of the ball tonight.”
