Lady Patriots Look To Continue Their Winning Ways In 2012 Tennis Season-Opener Tonight At Edgewood
“This year we have big shoes to fill as the previous team had a winning record, and we won the sectional for the second straight year,” OV head coach Barbara Spinks explained. “We graduated our number one, number two and number three singles positions and one of our number one doubles players. So as you can see we will be regrouping this season. All of our returning players will have to adjust to playing in different positions. Our returning players that played on varsity last year are: Rachel Truax, she was a number one doubles player last year; and Jocelyn McKay and Victoria Byerly played number two doubles. We have a strong junior varsity group (from last year) returning in Kayla Samick, Hannah Corder, Lexi Heck and Tiffany Kong. We also have Taylar Ranard returning to play for us. She was here her Freshman year then moved and played for Edgewood the last two years.
“We will be playing our first match (tonight) against arch rival Edgewood. It is also a conference match so it is important that we start out strong. For that match Kayla Samick will be playing number one singles, Victoria Byerly will play number two and Rachel Truax will play in the number three singles position. In doubles at number one will be Jocelyn McKay and Taylar Ranard. Number two doubles will be Hannah Corder and Lexi Heck. Tiffany Kong will be playing on the varsity team in later matches. These positions will most likely change for a few matches until we can get a feel as to which girl can help us get a win at what spot.
“We only have five junior varsity players this year. These girls are just learning how to play, but they are working hard and will get great experience this year. They are Darby DeFord, Tara Langley, Auytum Garrison, Ella Sluss and Lacy Wooldridge.”
As was mentioned, the Lady Patriots will travel to Edgewood tonight to take on the host Lady Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. Owen Valley will play host to North Daviess on Monday, April 16, at 4:30 p.m.
